Not exactly the body I pictured myself having, specially after completing my college basketball career. But sure enough, life kicked in after college. The 9-5 job. The eating out because I sucked at cooking anything edible. The hella drinking, partying and eating like shit on the weekends. The feeling all gross and blaaah on Monday, but still avoiding the gym all week thing. Yup, I get it. All that kicked my ass too and I gained 65 lbs in a year! I remember the moment when it all hit me. I was getting ready in the bathroom one morning and I was putting up my long, Mexican hair up in a pony tail (pre-mohawk days). I had my hands up tying up my scrunchy when I saw it. A motha-f*@#ing stretch mark right across my stomach! WTF?! Last time I had looked at my stomach, I had abs…now I got ONE stretch mark!? Gaining weight, changed my whole life. I went from the social butterfly at the club, to sitting at home on the weekends to avoid the “whoa, you got fat!” look from people who didn’t think I noticed their facial expressions.

It was crazy. I caught myself doing shit I had never done…like, pulling my shirt when I sat down and trying to disguise my body in the sheets hoping they didn’t notice………(they notice).

It wasn’t until I was overweight that I understood ALL the emotional components of it. I was aware of how different my life was. I got why people, specially LGBT, hated going to the gym, why it was hard to stick with it and why some trainers were good and some were fucking great!.I became a great trainer, fitness expert and owner of The Perfect Sidekick because…

I get it!

And, I’ve built The Perfect Sidekick around that. Hence…cultivating a gym environment where you can just come in, smoke your workout and not worry about judgment, creepers, mirrors or any of that weird shit that goes on in gyms.

The whole concept of the gym is composed of my experience going through a 65 lbs weight loss journey, almost a decade of no-bullshit training, a woman entrepreneur of color and my shenanigans as a lesbian.

I think if you can relate to anything I mentioned in this post, there’s a REALLY good chance you’re going to L-O-V-E working out at my gym. Trust me, I get Y-O-U……now get after IT! (for free!)

I invite you to come down and try The Perfect Sidekick with unlimited Group Training Sessions for an entire week ON THE HOUSE!

Jen Deering, Defensive End: Oakland, CA – Personal Trainer at The Perfect Sidekick

“The decision to try out for Team USA was a goal I set for myself when I first decided to play for the
Bandits and saw a picture of Danielle Golay in a USA uniform. The fact that I get the chance to put
that uniform on and play next to her, as well as two of my other Bandits teammates is an absolute
dream come true. At 31 years old, I finally get to represent my country, playing a sport that I love. I
plan to do everything I can to bring home a gold medal from Finland this summer.”

Jen was a player of collegiate basketball and softball for UC Berkeley. She played two season
for the Bay Area Bandits as tight end and defensive end. She then participated in the Women’s
Football Association First Team All-American as tight end in 2012. After surgery for an ACL injury,
in September of 2011, Jen returned to tackle football in 2012 and completely fell in love with the
sport.

Angie Larsen, Kicker: San Jose, CA – Assistant Manager for Starbucks

“The idea of having the opportunity to win a gold medal in a World Tournament for our country, as
Team USA, is not only an amazing honor, but it blows my mind.”

Played collegiate soccer for Fresno State and played as a kicker in the 2012 Women’s Football
Association’s 1st Team All-America. Angies has always loved football. Once she moved to San
Francisco, she joined the San Francisco Women’s Flag Football League) and the Bandits where she
met Jen.

Danielle Golay, Defensive End: Alameda, CA – Senior Mngr, Quality Operations at Genentech

“I’m grateful for another opportunity to represent the USA, playing a sport that I absolutely love.”

Danielle played collegiate basketball for Seton Hall and USC. She has played women’s tackle
football for 12 years, playing a range of positions from tight end to defensive end and linebacker.
Danielle is the owner of the Bay Area Bandits, with whom she has played and coached for since
2010. She played with the Women’s Association of Football First-Team All-American as linebacker
in 2012. She is a previous gold medal winner for Team USA football during it’s inaugural season in
Sweden, 2010.

But guess who was standing on the other side of me, the owner of SWEET, Shannon. Of course, I busted out my networking skills and after a business card swap and BAM…we were official homies!
How TPS affected our relationship is by the commonality of being with the same group of people who enjoy being fit like we do. Of course, aside from the fact that, it is where we met, so I guess, it played a role in getting us together since that’s how we cross paths.

The best part about being active together is that it’s sexy! It’s a turn on to know your partner cares about their health and fitness, and to know exactly how hard they worked to get those muscles and that sexy body!

TPS is where we’ve met all our mutual friends. Being able to have fun nights out with other TPS clients, ensures that we surround ourselves with other awesome people. It’s important to remain social while in a relationship, and hanging out with other clients keeps us sane!
And as stated in previously, working out together is sexy – those muscles and our improved energy levels certainly come in handy in the *cough, cough* bedroom!

Anywho…meet out first couple, Corelle & Kaetchen.

“We met through mutual friends. We knew of each other at Mills College, but had never hung out before. Kaetchen asked Corelle to get coffee and that started what has now become a 2 year relationship.

Corelle would always plan work outs at Golds, but Kaetchen would spend most of the time complaining… We now get to take classes together or apart and get in shape without having friction between us, or having one person be the motivator.

After joining TPS, we realized how important being healthy was to each of us, but in different ways. Being a part of TPS has brought us closer because we can talk about our health and workouts, while still having enough space to feel like we’re doing it for ourselves and not for each other. We’re both more confident in ourselves, and that helps us interact with each other better, and feel great about the way we look and feel. It also provides an important outlet for us to energize ourselves and release stress that used to be taken out on the other person.

We are more active, more energized, less stressed, and healthier than we were a year ago. We go to the gym and even if we’re having a hard morning, after we work out everything is okay. Our advice is if you want to be in a better place in your relationship and in life, TPS could be.”
